Dear Parents,

I am a parent of two daughters, both of them graduates from Garrett Park Elementary. I feel very strongly about two things: giving back to the community and reading. When I was younger, I had difficulty reading. It turns out that I was dyslexic. With the help of trained teachers, I was able to overcome my dyslexia and succeed with reading and other obstacles that my dyslexia had caused. I have created the Jeremy’s “READ-IT CLUB” to entice children to read. After five successful years, with over 325 students completing the program to date, the Club is returning again this year – bigger and better than ever!.

Jeremy’s “READ-IT CLUB” is for all Garrett Park Elementary students. We are trying to motivate your children to read by offering incentives. The goal for the year (November 28th, 2011 through May 18th, 2012) is for your children to read a total of 10 or more, age appropriate books. They can read independently, have the book read aloud to them or buddy read. When your child finishes reading each book, he/she should fill out a “READ-IT CLUB” journal with the title of the book, author, the characters and a few sentences about the plot for each book (kindergarten/first grade students can dictate to a parent or guardian). A parent/guardian should sign off on each book that is read. When your child finishes reading all 10 books and completes the “READ-IT CLUB” journal, give the journal to your child’s teacher. Students will receive a t-shirt and many other terrific coupons and prizes when they complete their reading goals.Those children who wish to participate should turn in the “Yes, I want to join” sign up sheet by November 18th, 2011 to their teacher. At that time he/she will receive the “READ-IT CLUB” journal, which includes everything needed to get started.
